ABA Canada
"Basketball for Canadians, by Canadians"
OUR VISION
Our Vision:
There have been many attempts to bring professional/senior level basketball to Canada over the years, with efforts falling short of any actual domestic development. In order to continue Canada’s success in basketball there needs to be a place where Canadian basketball players can continue to train and compete during, and beyond, their college/university careers. While Canada has adopted a strong long term development model, most young talented Canadian athletes find themselves migrating to the U.S. and overseas for maximum exposure and competition.
The time has come to create a TRUE domestic basketball league in Canada that focuses on the development of Canadian players, coaches, officials and builders. ABA-Canada will work towards developing a unified organization of the basketball community (regionally, provincially and nationally). Unlike the typical “Pro” sports model, profits will be used to help improve the development of basketball and help those in need in communities throughout Canada.
Our Plan:
So Far…
We have taken our first steps by creating an All-Canadian select team, the ABA-Canada Revolution basketball club. The Revolution competed in numerous events throughout Ontario to help promote and inform communities about ABA-Canada initiatives. The past two summers the Revolution played exhibition games against several high level NCAA teams including Baylor, Murray State, UC Santa Barbara, Kennesaw State, and Gannon University, as well as hosting the CAWA Chinese Traveling Team. These domestic showcases are the highest level of competiton available for Canadian players during the summers months, while allowing community based teams to develop and prepare for the inaugural season of the ABA-Canada Conference, as a part of North America’s largest basketball league, the American Basketball Association.
What’s Next…Spring/Summer 2012
For the summer of 2012, ABA-Canada, as a part of the 2nd annual Canadian Basketball Festival, will be hosting the inaugural ABA-Canada “Top-12” National Invitational Tournament (NIT), featuring elite Sr. Men’s basketball teams representing cities/regions/clubs from across Ontario and Canada. Team rosters will showcase many of Canada’s top players from the past, present and future. Established Sr. Men’s teams will be invited to participate in the NIT Championship while other teams will have the opportunity to compete for a “Top-12” spot through ABA-Canada sanctioned Regional Qualification Tournaments (RQT’s), starting the first weekend in May 2012. RQT champions will earn invitations to compete in this unprecedented opportunity for a Sr. Men’s National Championship.
Regional Qualification Tournaments:
Upcoming RQT’s…
May 4/5 – Northern Qualification Tournament – Timmins, Ontario
May 5/6 – Southeast Qualification Tournament – Bowmanville, Ontario
Additional RQT’s to be announced shortly. If you are interested in registering your team, or as an individual player looking for a team, please contact ltdsports@rogers.com for more information.
What’s Next…Fall/Winter 2012
ABA-Canada will be coordinating Sr. level (19+) competition with regional teams comprised of domestic Canadian talent. The objective of ABA-Canada is to help Canadian players, coaches, officials and builders develop professional opportunities, both on and off the court. As an official affiliate of the American Basketball Association, the largest basketball league in North America (with over 70 teams), the ABA-Canada Conference will be home to several regional basketball teams competing in the ABA’s 2012 season, representing Canada’s true domestic basketball league.
